Bonus Newsletter: How to Prepare for a T1D Pregnancy.
Preparing for pregnancy was something that for a long time I told myself I couldn’t even do. I had always had my A1Cs above the pregnancy targets, and I didn’t have a lot of confidence that I could lower my A1C, or even knowledge about how to go about doing that. Most of my endo appointments in my early 20s was a gentle reassurance that I “could definitely do it” if I just “tried a little harder.”
My endo was a sweetheart, but wasn’t exactly the coach or strategist that I needed.
Over the years I was exposed to more and more information about how people - especially moms with diabetes - were managing their diabetes to get lower A1Cs and higher times-in-range. I adopted these practices and began to see more gains.
A couple of years ago, toward the end of my second pregnancy, I realized that so much of what I knew about pregnancy and so much of what I did to prepare for pregnancy was cobbled together from random medical appointments, conversations and blog posts, a couple of already-outdated books (because diabetes devices change so quickly), and whatever people were posting on Facebook. There were a lot of mixed messages and incomplete (or even inaccurate information) as you can imagine.
Pregnancy (and parenthood) is an enormous undertaking, no matter who you are! When it came to pregnancy and diabetes, it didn’t feel right that so much of our education relies on crowd-sourcing. So I created my first class, T1D & the 3Ps, which I have since relaunched as Your T1D Pregnancy Roadmap, a self-paced course that walks you through the entire pregnancy process, from preconception to postpartum. We discuss not only the impact that pregnancy has on diabetes, but the impact that having diabetes will have on your pregnancy experience.
I taught the class live for a couple of years before launching the self-paced course, but this fall I am introducing a hybrid option! We start one week from today, Thurs, 9/21. You’ll get the self-paced modules which you’ll have access to forever, plus 4 weeks of live discussions, Q&A, and coaching with me (now a CDCES + T1D mom of 2!). We’ll also have a couple of guest speakers stopping by.
Your T1D Pregnancy Roadmap is the guidebook for pregnancy. I will show you where the potholes and dead-ends are, how to stay encouraged when you’re getting tired, overcoming challenges like insulin resistance and morning sickness while managing things in a tight range, and even how to prepare to make the most of your destination: parenthood. You’ll hear real stories from women who have done it before, and find community with those who are pursuing it now. We start next Thursday, so make sure you enroll soon. You’ll get immediate access to the modules and worksheets.
Maybe having a baby has been a dream for awhile but maybe you’re pushing it off because you’re anxious, or maybe you’ve had some conversations with your provider and you’re feeling super overwhelmed, or maybe you’ve done a pregnancy before but you either didn’t have diabetes then or it didn’t quite go the way that you wanted.
Wherever you’re starting from, we are all pursuing the same destination: a happy, healthy baby.
